When should I upgrade to the latest version of WordPress?
Typically, it is a good idea to wait a month or so until all the bugs are worked out of the newer version. We would recommend updating to the latest version of WordPress only after you have verified that any plugins you are using will be compatible with the new version.

Look at all the plugins you have installed and verify they are working correctly with the new version of WordPress by visiting the plugin directory on wordpress.org. You can find this information located on the right side of the page in the ‘FYI’ section. Also, check the forums by clicking the ‘See what others are saying…’ link to see if there are any reported problems with the plugin working correctly. This is why we recommend you only install plugins that are very popular, tested and supported. Otherwise you will need to find an alternative to any plugins you have installed or wait until the developer gets around to updating their plugin to work with the new version.

When you do update, you should take the time to back up your database in case something goes wrong. Otherwise you could lose your data. Keep in mind, your site will continue to work just fine if you do not update. The benefit to updating is typically new features, faster performance, security fixes, etc. If you would like help updating your site we can do this for you at our hourly rate. Typically it will take 30 minutes or less.

Since WordPress version 2.7+ I believe…the upgrade process is much easier. You should still back up your database and verify there are no known issues with your pulgins, but you can now press one link in the dashboard to update to the latest version. Life just got a little easier.

What is a RSS feed?
RSS is a format in which regularly changing content can be delivered to subscribers. If someone was interested in content from your site, rather than having to remember to visit your site to see what was new, they can simply subscribe to your site’s feed and get updates pushed to them. Every WordPress site we set up has this feature. For more on this topic visit our post on What is a RSS Feed?
